Ushenish Lighthouse

Remotely located on the isolated east coast of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, Ushenish Lighthouse lies 4 miles (6.5 km) southeast of Lochskipport and comprises a stumpy little tower some 12m (40 feet) in height. It was constructed by the noted lighthouse engineers David and Thomas Stevenson and was first illuminated in 1857. The lighthouse is automatic and is remotely monitored from the Northern Lighthouse Board Headquarters in Edinburgh. The light has a range of 19 miles (31 km). Its former lightkeepers' cottages have been demolished.
