A summit on the boundary between the Scottish Borders and South Lanarkshire, Black Hill (also known as Gawky Hill) rises to just beyond 500m (1640 feet) a quarter-mile (0.5 km) northwest of Scawdmans Hill and 2 miles (3 km) southeast of Coulter. The hill has a subsidiary summit at 499m (1637 feet) located a quarter-mile (0.5 km) to the west. There are ancient cultivation terraces on its western slopes and two Iron-Age hill-forts to the northwest.
