Union Square

An award-winning combination of shopping mall and retail park built on the site of railway sidings between Aberdeen Harbour and railway station, Union Square shopping centre opened in 2009, having taken three years to build. At the time, it represented the largest development of its type in Scotland. The centre features 60 shops and restaurants and comprises 65,032 sq. m (700,000 sq. feet) of space, including 18,000 sq. m (193,750 sq. feet) of retail units, a 15,000 sq. m (161,458 sq. feet) shopping park, ten-screen cinema, 5700 sq. m (61,354 sq. feet) of restaurants and catering space, a 203-bed hotel and 1700 parking spaces, divided between surface parking and a three-level parking structure. The anchor stores are Marks & Spencer and TK Maxx. At the northern end of the development a new enclosed civic square connects the sandstone facade of Aberdeen Railway Station with an external public space on Guild Street. A new bus station also formed part of the development.

The land to the west of the harbour, where Union Square now stands, was reclaimed when the River Dee was tamed from the mid-18th century. This land was controversially obtained by the railway and became the site of a goods station and associated sidings, later replaced by a bus station.

Union Square is wholly owned by London-based group Hammerson plc, which manages a portfolio of commercial property in the UK and France with a value of around £5.4 billion (2008).
