Eilean Kearstay

(Eilean Chearstaigh)

An uninhabited island in East Loch Roag, Eilean Kearstay (Gael: Eilean Chearstaigh) lies at the southeast tip of Great Bernera a mile (1.5 km) west of Callanish on Lewis. The island extends to 77 ha (190 acres) and rises to 37m (121 feet) at a point towards the north of the island marked by a conspicuous cairn. In 1990 the island was sold by the laird of Great Bernera to two Australians who celebrated with a party on the island that included amongst the guests the Australian Consul. Within three years the island was sold once again.
