Hermetray


(Thernatraigh)

The largest of a number of uninhabited islands lying to the northeast of North Uist, Hermetray (Gael: Thernatraigh) extends to 72 ha (178 acres) and rises to 35m (114 feet) at Compass Knoll (Gael: Cnoc a' Chombaiste). The island lies 5½ miles (9 km) northeast of Lochmaddy and was the site of a government-sponsored fishing station in the 17th century.
