Clach Mhor a Che

(Clach Mhòr a Che)

A standing stone on the west coast of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, Clach Mhor a Che ('the great stone of Che') lies on the shore at Claddach Kyles overlooking Kirkibost Island. The stone measures 2.7m (8¾ feet in height, 1.15m (3¾ feet) wide and between 15 and 30cm (6 to 12 inches) in thickness. Dating from between the 1st and 3rd Millennium BC, the stone is mentioned by Martin Martin in his A Description of the Western Isles of Scotland (1703) and Erskine Beveridge (1851 - 1920) suggests that it is the subject of several local legends and perhaps that it marks the site of a battle.
