Located at the northeastern extreme of Argyll and Bute Council Area, Loch Sloy lies on the western slopes of Ben Vorlich and is a hydro-electric reservoir as well as a loch. When built in 1951, the dam wall was the longest in Scotland at 366m (1200 feet) and 46m (150 feet) in height. Served by streams from Ben Vorlich and to the south Ben Vane, the reservoir has a tunnel aqueduct that leads to a power station on the western side of Loch Lomond at Inveruglas. The Inveruglas Water also empties from this reservoir. The reservoir has provided a safeguard population for powan (Coregonus clupeoides), a fish whose natural population is confined to Loch Lomond and Loch Eck.
