A long and narrow freshwater loch of the Lochaber district of Highland Council Area, Loch Shiel extends for 17 miles (27 km) in a dog-leg fashion and acts as the boundary between Moidart to the west, Sunart to the south and Ardgour to the east. At its northern end lies Glenfinnan, where the Glenfinnan Monument stands, while at its southwestern end lies Acharacle, where the River Shiel flows northwards to Shielfoot. Patches of woodland along its shore comprise ancient Caledonian forest of birch, pine and oak trees that was designated in 2000 as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), which also protects the habitat of the rare black-throated diver (Gavia arctica) and chequered skipper butterfly (Carterocephalus palaemon).
