Loch Lyon

A loch and reservoir of western Perth and Kinross, Loch Lyon lies close to the border with Argyll and Bute Council Area, at the head of Glen Lyon. Retained at its eastern end by the Lubreoch Dam, this is one of the main reservoirs of the Breadalbane Hydro-Electric Power Scheme. Constructed in 1958, the massive buttress Lubreoch Dam is the largest in the scheme, some 530m (1740 feet) in length and 39m (128 feet) in height. The River Lyon emerges below the dam. The building of the reservoir more than doubled the size of the former loch, and lost important salmon spawning grounds which were substituted by the Lochay Compensation Scheme created above the Falls of Lochay on the River Lochay.
