A stream which, for its entire length, forms part of the boundary between Inverclyde and North Ayrshire Council Areas, the Kelly Burn rises as headstreams on the Leap Moor, a half-mile (1 km) southwest of Loch Thom. It flows west, through the Kelly Reservoir, to fall into the Firth of Clyde between Skelmorlie and Wemyss Bay, having completed a course of 4 miles (6 km).
