Mouse Water

The Mouse Water rises in plantation forest 2 miles (3 km) northeast of Wilsontown close to the border between South Lanarkshire and West Lothian. Its upper reaches flow through a post-industrial landscape, associated with the iron and coal pits around Wilsontown. The river flows south to Forth, were it receives the Abbey Burn and then on to Carstairs, where it turns west to pass Cleghorn and join the River Clyde at Kirkfieldbank, to the west of Lanark. It is 14 miles (22 km) in length and its principal tributary is the Dippool Water. It is spanned by several bridges, the most notable being the remarkable Cartland Bridge which crosses the river in its gorge to the northwest of Lanark, and the 17th-Century Mousemill Bridge. The Mouse Water provides challenging canoeing.
