Machir Bay

(Machair Bay)

A wide, sandy bay of the island of Islay in Argyll and Bute, Machir Bay lies on the island's west coast to the south of Coul Point. The settlements of Machrie and Kilchoman overlook the bay. Despite the name having appeared on Ordnance Survey maps and elsewhere for 150 years, the signs were changed to 'Machair Bay' by the local authority in 2015. The bay is part of the Rhinns of Islay Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) identified as an excellent example of a complex beach-dune-machair assemblage.
