Loch Moidart

(Inner Loch Moidart, Outer Loch Moidart)

A sea-loch on the west coast of Moidart in the Lochaber district of Highland Council Area, Loch Moidart opens out to the south of the Sound of Arisaig. Outer Loch Moidart and Inner Loch Moidart are divided by the headland of Rubha Port a' Bhata. The Inner Loch empties completely at low tide and is fed by the River Moidart which rises to the northeast and flows through Glen Moidart to meet the loch at the settlement of Kinlochmoidart. The island of Eilean Shona almost fills the Outer Loch, dividing the widening body of water into North and South Channels. Woodland along its shore represents part of an ancient Caledonian forest of birch, alder and oak trees, which was designated in 2005 as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
