Hamnavoe

(Hamla Voe)

A deep sheltered anchorage on the south coast of Orkney mainland, Hamnavoe (occasionally Hamla Voe) lies next to the town of Stromness and for a long time provided a safe haven for whaling ships and the merchantmen of the Hudson's Bay Company. A ferry leaves through Hamnavoe for Scrabster on the mainland. The outer reaches are known as Stromness Harbour and the islands of Inner Holm and Outer Holm guard the entrance.
