Once the property of Arbroath Abbey and a residence of Cardinal Beaton in the 1530s and 1540s, Ethie Castle lies 2½ miles (4 km) southeast of Inverkeilor in Angus. The property was granted to Sir Robert Carnegie of Kinnaird in 1549, eventually passing to Sir John Carnegie who was created Lord Lour (1639) and Earl of Ethie (1647). These titles were later exchanged for others including the earldom of Northesk and the property remained in the Carnegie family until the 20th Century. The castle was immortalised by Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832) as Knockwinnoch in his novel The Antiquary.
Ethie Castle continues as a family home but now also offers exclusive hospitality.
