A 19th-century mansion house located 3 miles (5 km) southeast of Brechin, in Angus, Kinnaird Castle stands on the site of earlier castles destroyed by fire in the 10th and 19th centuries. It was enlarged and remodelled in 1854-60 by the architect David Bryce (1803-76). It was a property of the Carnegies from the 15th century. The castle offers views over Strathmore and the Grampian mountains and is surrounded by a large deer park, woodlands, trout farms and arable land. The castle is famed for its art collection, including works by Jamesone, Raphael, Murillo, Durer, van Dyck, Raeburn, Landseer and Lucas Cranach.
