A grand Scots-Baronial mansion on the east coast of the island of Islay in the Inner Hebrides, Dunlossit House overlooks the Sound of Islay from an elevated position a quarter-mile (0.4 km) south of Port Askaig. It began as a shooting lodge, but was aggrandised c.1868 and rebuilt in 1909 following a fire by the owner Donald Turner Martin of Kintour. Constructed of dark stone, which contrasts with distinctive pepperpot towers and dressings in red sandstone, the house comprises three storeys, with crowstepped gables, and a four storey tower with a parapet, attached to the south. Dunlossit was purchased by the London-based banker Helmut Schroder in 1937 and continues to be owned by his billionaire family.
The 7500-ha / 18,500-acre estate extends from the east coast to Laggan Bridge in the centre of the island, and includes hill-ground, farmland and woodland. Income comes from farming, forestry, stalking, loch and river fishing, renewable energy, and property let to local people and as holiday accommodation.
