The Port

A district on the southwestern margin of Dalbeattie, in S Central Dumfries and Galloway, The Port represents the old harbour of the town, located on the banks of the Urr Water at Dub o' Hass. Today it is the location of a small business park. Only small vessels and barges could reach Dalbeattie, often towed by horses along the bank. A port was established here by the 18th C. but had reached its peak by the end of the 19th C., although barges of fertiliser and feed were still being off-loaded here as late as the 1960s. In 2008 a restoration was completed, tidying the area, laying paths and installing interpretation boards.
