Roan Head

A headland which represents the northeastern extremity of the island of Flotta in Orkney, Roan Head extends into Scapa Flow to the north of Pan Hope, 2 miles (3 km) east of the Flotta Oil Terminal. There was once an 18-hole golf course here, laid out by the Royal Navy in 1915. Each ship stationed here undertook the construction of one hole, and one battleship is said to have spent £70 acquiring quality turf for their green. More than 1700 officers paid a shilling each towards the maintenance of the course. It continued in use until after the Second World War.
