One of a pair of summits in the N of Dumfries and Galloway, to the south of the border with South Ayrshire, Near Cairn rises to 289m (948 feet) a quarter-mile (0.5 km) south of Far Cairn and 2 miles (3 km) northeast of Miltonise.
