Baldoon Castle

Baldoon Castle is located a mile (1.5 km) south southwest of Wigtown, in Dumfries and Galloway. The castle was the property of the Dunbars of Westfield from 1530 until c.1800.

The ruined, ivy covered remains are said to be haunted by the ghost of Janet Dalrymple, the daughter of Sir James Dalrymple, who walks the ruins on the anniversary of her untimely death, 12th September 1669. The story goes that she was persuaded by her parents to marry David Dunbar, heir of Sir David Dunbar of Baldoon, although her true love was Archibald, 3rd Lord Rutherford, but he had little money. Subsequent events are confused: either she stabbed her husband on their wedding night and died insane soon afterwards, or he murdered her after she attacked him. Dunbar recovered and went on the marry a daughter of the Earl of Eglinton. A version of the tale was immortalised by Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832) in his Bride of Lammermoor.
