Carn Eige

(Càrn Eighe)

A prominent triangular peak in the West Highlands, Carn Eige (or Càrn Eighe) rises to a height of 1183m (3881 feet) on a remote ridge which is shares with Mam Sodhail, 2½ miles (4 km) south of Loch Mullardoch. This mountain lies on the border between the Skye & Lochalsh and Inverness districts of Highland Council Area, and was once the highest peak in Ross and Cromarty. Classified as a Munro, it is the highest mountain north of the Great Glen, it is also the second most prominent mountain in the UK after Ben Nevis. Its summit is marked by an Ordnance Survey primary triangulation pillar installed between 1946 and 1949, and its name is derived from the Gaelic for "file hill".
