A red granite mountain massif in the E Grampians, Bennachie rises to a height of 528m (1733 feet) at Oxen Craig 2 miles (3 km) south southwest of Oyne and 5 miles (8 km) west of Inverurie in the Garioch district of Aberdeenshire. The mountain includes the other distinctive tor peaks of Watch Craig and the Mither Tap. The Mither Tap o' Bennachie (518m / 1698 feet) is flanked by a stone-walled fort dating from the Iron Age. In the late 1970s, a new mineral -Macaulayite - was discovered in weathered granite at Pittodrie, on the northeast slopes of the Bennachie and named for the Macaulay Institute in Aberdeen.
