A remarkable small museum lying in the Birsay district of the Orkney mainland, the Kirbuster Farm Museum complex is centred around a smoke-filled central hearth homestead which dates back to the 16th century. Visitors can move from this, with its traditional stone, into a rather grand 18th century farmhouse with its parlour and bedrooms, all replete with period furnishings. Adjacent are traditional byres and the museum gardens are peaceful and shady, with the Burn of Kirbuster flowing through the extensive grounds, which include farm machinery, livestock and examples of traditional crops. The museum, which is run by Orkney Council, is located 2 miles (3 km) south of the Standing Stones of Birsay.
