Heart of Scotland Services

(Harthill Service Area)

The only service area on the M8 Motorway between Edinburgh and Glasgow, Heart of Scotland Services is located at Harthill. The greater part of the station is on the east-bound carriageway, but a covered pedestrian walkway crosses the motorway from the opposite carriageway. Opened in 1978 and originally known as the Harthill Service Area, this was the first motorway service station in Scotland. The station was subject to a complete refurbishment in 2006-08 at a cost of £4.1 million, with a new lattice-like walkway installed to replace the original. It is now operated by BP and includes shops, a restaurant and fast-food outlet but no accommodation. The service station also includes a long-distance bus interchange.
