Located between the settlements of Dolphinton and Walston on the southern slopes of the valley of the South Medwin, the Black Mount rises to a height of 516m (1692 feet). Its summit is marked by an Ordnance Survey primary triangulation pillar installed in 1936 for the re-triangulation of Great Britain. The settlement of Dunsyre is located a mile (1.5 km) to the north.
