Located on Moffat High Street, the Moffat House Hotel was built as Moffat House in 1761 by John Adam (1721 - 92) for the 2nd Earl of Hopetoun. The house, which cost £3,538 to build, comprises a main block with two wings and is on a modest scale compared to some of the other Adam-built mansions. It was not until 1950 that it was converted into a hotel.
