The late 12th Century church of St. Martin lies on the eastern outskirts of Haddington. Thought to be one of the oldest surviving churches in Scotland, St Martin's was originally part of the Cistercian Abbey founded by Ada, daughter-in-law of King David I, in 1178. The nuns of the abbey gave the name to the Nungate barony and district of the town. Although nothing of the abbey itself remains, the ruined nave of St Martin's Church can still be found on the edge of Nungate. The red-sandstone church was acquired by the town following the Reformation and used for Presbyterian worship, although it fell into disrepair in the 17th C.
