An extensive woodland situated 6 miles (10 km) southwest of Elgin in Moray, Monaughty Forest extends from Califer in the southwest to Miltonduff in the northeast. This was the Forestry Commission's first forest in Scotland, with 533 ha / 1317 acres of European larch, Japanese larch, Norway spruce, Sitka spruce, Douglas fir and Scots pine planted between 1920 and 1923 on the site of a forest that had been felled. A team of foresters were recruited locally and led by John McEwen (1887 - 1992). The forest now extends to 1470 ha / acres) and secluded areas of mature Scots pine provide a habitat for Capercaillie. Heldon Hill and Pluscarden Abbey can be found in this area. Sections of the forest are known as Heldon Wood and Burgie Wood.
The forest is now owned and managed by Forest and Land Scotland.
