The ruined Craigend Castle lies in Mugdock Country Park, 2 miles (3 km) north of Milngavie. Built in 1815, this mansion was designed in the Regency Gothic style by Alexander Ramsay (c.1777 - 1847). In 1851, the estate passed to Sir Andrew Buchanan, ambassador to the Viennese Court. The house was rented during the early 20th century, with tenants including the newspaper proprietor George Outram and Sir Harold Yarrow (1884 - 1962), who owned a shipyard on the Clyde. Glasgow businessman, William Wilson opened the short-lived Craigend Zoo (also known as Milngavie Zoo) here in 1949. The stables were converted to the Mugdock Park Visitor's Centre, completed in 1996, but the house deteriorated and was placed on the 'Buildings at Risk' Register in 1990.
