A mountain massif of NW Sutherland, Foinaven (Gael: Foinne Bhein) rises steeply from the lochan-littered moorland to the east of Loch Inchard, 5½ miles (9 km) northeast of Laxford Bridge. Composed of quartzite, the mountain sparkles spectacularly in the sunshine but is also of significant geological interest as an excellent exposure of the Moine Thrust. Its five summits are strung out along a 3 mile (5 km) ridge and reach a height of 911m (2988 feet) at Ganu Mor. For many years this was recorded as 914m (2999 feet) just 0.3m (1 foot) short of being classified as a Munro. The margin of error was such that the mountain was accurately re-measured by Larbert-based surveyors CMCR Ltd on behalf of the Munro Society in 2007 and now retains its classification as a Corbett. The other prominent top is Ceann Garbh at 902m (2959 feet).
