Mull and West Highland Railway, The

(Isle of Mull Railway)

Located on the eastern coast of the island of Mull, Argyll and Bute, this railway was the only island tourist railway in Scotland. Now disused, this 260mm (10 inch) gauge railway ran from the village of Craignure to Torosay Castle, a distance of 1 mile (1.5 km). It offered views over the Sound of Mull, the Glencoe hills and the island of Lismore. Work on the railway began in 1976 and it opened to the public in 1984. Services were suspended in 2010 because the Torosay Castle Estate was placed on the market. The railway was permanently closed in 2015, its tracks lifted and rolling stock sold.
