Pilgrim's Way, The

Signposted by the Whithorn Pilgrimage Trust, The Pilgrim's Way in Dumfries and Galloway follows a route southwards from the Southern Upland Way through The Machars. It passes through New Luce and the early Christian holy sites of Glenluce, the White Loch, Whithorn, Isle of Whithorn and St Ninian's Cave. The main part of the route from Glenluce to Whithorn is 25 miles (40 km) long and passes the remains of the Cistercian Abbey of Glenluce where the monks used to treat lepers en route to the nearby mediaeval leper colony of Liberland. From Stairhaven the route turns inland, passing the House of Elrig which was the boyhood home of Gavin Maxwell (1914-69), author of 'Ring of Bright Water'.
