Jordan Burn

(Pow Burn)

A stream which is rarely visible during its course through S Edinburgh. The Jordan Burn, also known as the Pow Burn in its lower reaches, rises on the northern slopes of Easter Craiglockhart Hill. From there, it generally follows the Southern Suburban railway line although usually in a culvert, appearing only briefly to the east of Morningside and again behind Newington Cemetery. As the Pow Burn, it joins the Braid Burn west of Craigmillar.

Once little more than an open drain for the Morningside and Newington districts of Edinburgh, a sewer was constructed to lead waste-water out into the Firth of Forth when the Portobello authorities took proceedings against Edinburgh to clean up the watercourse in the late 19th Century.
