Heart of Midlothian War Memorial, Haymarket

A district of W Central Edinburgh, Haymarket lies a half-mile (0.8 km) southwest of the western end of Princes Street. Here is a significant road junction between Morrison Street, West Maitland Street, Dalry Road and Haymarket Terrace. Haymarket also represents an important transport interchange between its station (opened in 1842), buses and the Edinburgh Tram Line, which opened in 2014.

Land next immediately to the west of Haymarket Station was occupied by James Swan's cattle market until 1909 when this moved to Chesser. Thereafter this was the site of Haymarket Ice Rink, which opened in 1912 and operated until 1978. Adjacent railway sidings were redeveloped as housing and office accommodation from the 1970s until the end of the 20th C. and a striking £350-million scheme for the regeneration of the former Caledonian Railway coal yards, on the opposite side of Dalry Road began construction in 2019 after having been used as a carpark for many years. Haymarket Depot is a train maintenance facility located to the west at Roseburn.

The War Memorial Clock at the centre of the road junction commemorates the players from Heart of Midlothian Football Club who died in the two World Wars. It was constructed in 1922 and was moved slightly in 1971-72 and again in 2010-13.

Haymarket Cinema (later the Scotia Cinema) opened in 1912, making it one of the earliest in Scotland. It closed in 1964, slightly peculiarly served as a garage until it was demolished in 2013 to make way for student accommodation.
