Bore Stone

Mounted high on the wall outside the former Morningside Parish Church, on the corner of Morningside Road and Newbattle Terrace in S Edinburgh, is the Bore Stone. The stone is popularly believed to have supported the Royal Standard when the Scottish Army mustered on the Borough Muir before the Battle of Flodden in 1513. This claim has been challenged, and it may be that the stone was actually a simple boundary marker of a nearby estate. A plaque below the stone explains that "it long lay in the adjoining field, was then built into the wall near this spot and finally placed here by Sir John Stuart Forbes of Pitsligo, 1852."
