Ballumbie Castle

A ruined castle of S Angus, Ballumbie overlooks the Fithie Burn 2 miles (3 km) north of West Ferry and 4 miles (6.5 km) northeast of Dundee. Built in the 14th Century, this once strong courtyard castle was ruined by 1682 and later incorporated into the stable-block of Ballumbie House. Now both lie ruined in an estate of 61 ha (150 acres), which now incorporates the 18 hole, 6127 yard Ballumbie Castle Golf Course and considerable housing development.

Once the property of the Lovell family, including the infamous Henry of that ilk, who terrorised his neighbours in the 1560s. Later the castle was owned by the Maule-Ramsays of Panmure.
