A series of military accommodation blocks arranged around a parade-ground, Cameron Barracks are accessible from the Old Perth Road, a mile (1.5 km) east of the centre of Inverness. Built 1880-86 to designs by the Royal Engineer's Office in Edinburgh, there are four two-storey blocks constructed in red sandstone brought from the Black Isle. The buildings all feature crowstepped gables but the western and northwestern blocks feature pairs of enormous drum towers either side of the entrance, which give the impression of fairy-tale castles. The northeastern block features a clock-tower. The site was B-listed in 1971.
The barracks were the home of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders from 1886 which, through amalgamation, became the 4th Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland, in 2006. It was here that thousands of volunteer recruits came from around the Highlands during the First World War. Here too the returning wounded were managed and soldiers demobilised at the end of the War. The Barracks were also involved in processing conscientious objectors.
Houses were built as married quarters to the south in Wimblerley.
