Balruddery Den

A steep little wooded valley in E Perth & Kinross, Balruddery Den is situated a half-mile (1 km) southwest of Fowlis. It is a mile (1.6 km) in length. This locality was nationally-famous in the 19th century for its prolific fossil beds in Devonian strata, particularly notable for its fossil fish dating from around 410 million years ago. These came from small quarries initially opened to provide walling stone. Two of these quarries were reopened in 1999 and 2004 by a team from the University of Aberdeen for the purposes of palaeontological research.
