Edinbane Wind Farm

Edinbane Wind Farm is located on sloping heather moorland between Ben Sca and a ridge linking Beinn a' Chearcaill, Cruachan Beinn a' Chearcaill and Cruachan-Glen Vic Askill in the NW of the Isle of Skye, 6 miles (10 km) east of Dunvegan. The site descends to the north and south, with its altitude varying from 190m (623 feet) to 140m (459 feet). It comprises eighteen Enercon E70 turbines, each rated at 2.3 MW, giving a maximum generation capacity of 41.4 MW. Each turbine is mounted on a 64-m (210-foot) tower and has a blade diameter of 71m (233 feet), giving a total height to blade-tip of 100m (328 feet).

Developed by Vattenfall Wind Power Ltd and built by Dingwall-based contractor R.J. McLeod Ltd. at a cost of £50 million, the farm was commissioned in 2009 and officially opened on 1st July 2010 by Under-Secretary of State for Scotland, David Mundell (b. 1962). Construction included the laying of reinforced concrete bases for each tower, building 5¼ miles (8.5 km) of new access road, the upgrading of 6 miles (10 km) of existing forestry track and widening of public single track road. Parts of the new access road was built on a geotextile mat which floats over the existing peat.

An index-linked sum of £82,000 is made available annually to support the local community, split between the villages of Edinbane and Struan, for the lifetime of the wind farm.
