The Society of Our Lady of the Isles

The most northerly religious community in the UK is to be found at Aith Ness on the island of Fetlar in Shetland. The Society of Our Lady of the Isles (SOLI) was founded in 1988 and is located a mile (1.4 km) southeast of Houbie. The origins of the Society date from 1984, when English nun Sister Mary Agnes came to Fetlar to live a life of solitude and prayer. This Franciscan community is part of the Scottish Episcopal Church within the Anglican tradition. The foundation includes two chapels; the Byre Chapel, which is a conversion of a barn into a place of worship, and a modern Chapel dedicated to Christ the Encompasser and All His Angels. The Byre Chapel is remarkable for its rustic simplicity.
