A monument in a garden on the south side of Carnaig Street in Dornoch, the Witch's Stone commemorates the last execution of a witch in Britain, which took place in 1727. Janet Horne, from Loth, was accused by her neighbours of trying to turn her daughter into a pony which she used to ride to the devil. The daughter has a deformed hand which led to this terrible accusation. Both were imprisoned in Dornoch Jail until they could be tried and were sentenced to death. The daughter managed to escape, but poor Janet was stripped, rolled in tar and paraded through the town in a barrel before being carried to this spot where she was burned alive.
The stone is erroneously marked with the year 1722.
