The Flag Tower

(Knight's Law Tower)

A circular castellated tower and doo-cot within the policies of Penicuik House (Midlothian), The Flag Tower (also known as the Knight's Law Tower) is situated prominently on the summit of a wooded hillock a quarter-mile (0.5 km) northeast of the house and 1¼ miles (2 km) southwest of the centre of Penicuik. Built 1748-51 by Sir John Clerk of Penicuik (1676 - 1755) to complete a vista within the designed landscape he had constructed around his house, the tower also had a practical purpose, containing 1356 nest boxes to house pigeons as a source of meat. B-listed since 1971, the Tower is now on the Buildings-at-Risk register.
