Town Reservoir

A small reservoir in Greenock (Inverclyde), the Town Reservoir is located a half-mile (1 km) southwest of the town centre. Retained by earth embankments, it lies immediately to the west of Cowdenknowes Reservoir, while HM Prison Greenock lies to the west. Shown on John Wood's Plan of Greenock of 1825, the reservoir was built to provide additional water to the West Burn for the use of industry. It predates Robert Thom's water scheme which allowed the expansion of industry in the town.
