St Olaf's Church

(Saint Olaf's Church, Old Olnafirth Kirk)

A ruined church located at Voe, overlooking the head of the Olna Firth in the NW of the Mainland of Shetland, St. Olaf's Church (the Old Olnafirth Kirk) dates from the early 18th C. Although the roof has gone, the walls remain standing. Within are a pair of graveslabs belonging to the Gifford family. Above the arched entrance on the north gable, there is an armorial panel displaying the arms of Thomas Gifford and Elizabeth Mitchell of Busta House, their initials, and the date of their marriage in 1714. The kirkyard remained in use long after the closure of the church and a modern graveyard (Voe Cemetery) also now lies nearby.
