The middle of three narrow ornamental lochans which provide a centre-piece to Edinburgh Park, Loch Craig is located between commercial properties on Lochside Crescent, a half-mile (0.8 km) south southeast of Gogar Roundabout and 4½ miles (7 km) west southwest of the city centre. It is named after James Craig (1739-95), the architect who planned Edinburgh's New Town. While appearing to be an expansion of the Gogar Burn, the loch is actually maintained with recirculated mains water because of high nitrate pollutant levels in the river associated with agricultural runoff higher in the catchment, which could harm wildlife.
