Bearyards Water Tower

A distinctive landmark in Bishopbriggs (East Dunbartonshire), the Bearyards Water Tower lies on Boclair Road, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) north northeast of the town centre. The massive cylindrical concrete structure was built by Drummond Lithgow & Co in 1959 to the designs of F.A. Macdonald and Partners. It is 24.3m (80 feet) in height and holds 600,000 gallons (2.7 million litres) of water. A mobile telephone communications mast has been built on its roof. The tower provides the necessary height to supply nearby houses with drinking water, which has to be pumped into the structure from Loch Katrine and then released under the effects of gravity.
