Forming part of Newhouse Industrial Estate in North Lanarkshire, BioCity Scotland occupies a 8-ha (20-acre) site to north of the M8 motorway, a half-mile (0.8 km) southwest of Chapelhall. First developed by Organon Laboratories in 1948, the site was an early drug discovery research centre with a track record of generating a succession of products in the areas of anaesthesia and psychiatry. Organon was acquired by Schering-Plough in 2007, and then merged with US pharmaceutical giant Merck in 2009. BioCity Scotland was founded in 2012 and is owned 75% by BioCity Nottingham Ltd and 25% by Roslin Biocentre Ltd.
BioCity Scotland now provides laboratory bench space for small and medium-sized life science companies. Already home to a number of businesses, it has bold ambitions to attract others to become part of Scotland's biotechnology sector. The site includes a conference-meeting centre and a large car park.
