A large Roman Catholic co-educational comprehensive school on Kirriemuir Avenue in Cardonald, S Glasgow, Lourdes Secondary School is state-funded, educates around 1200 pupils and has a staff of 90 (2014). Opened in 1956, the school operates a house system, each named after Scottish abbeys; namely Kelso Abbey, Dundrennan Abbey, Melrose Abbey, Fearn Abbey and Jedburgh Abbey. The buildings are by the Glasgow-based architect Thomas Smith Cordiner (1902-65), extended in the 1970s and extensively refurbished in 2002.
Lourdes draws pupils from seven primary schools: Lourdes Primary, Our Lady of the Rosary Primary, St. Constantine's Primary, St. George's Primary, St. Marnock's Primary, St. Monica's Primary and St. Saviour's Primary.
In 2012, a giant world map was painted in the playground as part of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society's World at your Feet project.
Former pupils include actor and director Peter Mullan (b.1959), actor David O'Hara (b.1965) and the politicians Tommy Sheridan (b.1964) and Mhairi Black (b.1994).
