McLaren Monument

The McLaren Monument comprises a sandstone Celtic cross on a hillside in Glen Orchy, next to the old military road which extends north northwest from Stronmilchan, 1½ miles (2.5 km) northwest of Dalmally. Erected c.1900, it commemorates Duncan McLaren (1800-86), noted as the forward-thinking Lord Provost of Edinburgh who instituted free education in the city. The monument is by Sydney Mitchell & Wilson, with carving by sculptor William Beveridge.
